Why ranking different with targeted kewords in different Search Engines.
Google prefer: content links, related websites, simple url with keywords inside ( …/news/my-website-rocks.html ), unique content, links from authority sites, HTML sites rank better, content updates,
Google hates: link farms, copying content, the same content on many pages, keyword spam ( building many links with the same anchor), similarity in link portfolio (often when you join group of webmasters to build / exchange) links.
Google doesn’t care: site got sitewide link (still count like 1), site contain non related domain (monster - jobs, magnolia - social site, Facebook - student portal).
Yahoo loves: old domain, domain related to content, submission in Yahoo directory, Meta tags, content related domain ( Hotjobs - jobs, Hotels - travel site, Business - business directory ), links from old sites. Yahoo very conservative and if you take closer look, you will find that Yahoo rank old dinosaur sites way better. It takes years for new sites to rank well even if they got hundred thousands backlinks.
Yahoo hates: when your domain non related to content, large spammy metatags, small metatags, content way low on the bottom of the page, links from non related sites, links only from newest sites and directories.
Yahoo doesn’t care: Pagerank ( they have their own system they hide), reciprocal linking.
MSN loves: sitewide links, non reciprocal links, homepage links, website updates, content changes, appearance of new pages, well organized meta tags, PHP sites as well as HTML, human approval of a website.
MSN hates: reciprocal links, links from directories, webmasters who doesn’t update their sites a lot.
MSN doesn’t care about pagerank!

How do I improve the ranking of my web site in the search results?
"Use a "keyword" meta-tag to list key words for the document. Use a distinct list of keywords that relate to the specific page on your site instead of using one broad set of keywords for every page."
Relevance of the META Keywords Tag is minimal. The keywords tag may be considered in the overall equation of page quality depending on the search resource.
If the keywords or keyword phrases do not appear on the page visibly, then they should not appear in the keywords tag. We recommend that they come from your title element, meta description, heading and first paragraph of content, in that order.
Historical Note: For those search engines that are META enabled, the META Keywords Tag used to be one of the most important areas after the title element and page description. This tag has been abused over the years by marketers and consumers alike, that the search engines have decreased the relevance of the keywords tag. In some instances, the keywords tag has been deemed irrelevant.

Page Rank
Page Rank is a patented method to assign a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of measuring its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E). PageRank was developed at Stanford University by Larry Page (hence the name Page-Rank [Vise and Malseed, 2005]) and Sergey Brin as part of a research project about a new kind of search engine. The project started in 1995 and led to a functional prototype, named Google, in 1998. Shortly after, Page and Brin founded Google Inc., the company behind the Google search engine. While just one of many factors which determine the ranking of Google search results, PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of Google's web search tools. PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote.
Search Engines
Search engine or search service is a program designed to help find information stored on a computer system, such as on the World Wide Web, inside a corporate or proprietary network, or in a personal computer. The search engine allows one to ask for content meeting specific criteria (typically those containing a given word or phrase) and retrieves a list of references that match those criteria. Search engines use regularly updated indexes to operate quickly and efficiently. Without further qualification, search engine usually refers to a Web search engine, which searches for information on the public Web. Other kinds of search engine are enterprise search engines, personal search engines and mobile search engines.

Search engine optimization
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users. Another class of techniques, known as Black Hat SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove their listings. The initialism "SEO" can also refer to "search engine optimizers", a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.
